Between Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ hit song “Same Love,” and the NBA and NFL opening its doors to welcoming an openly gay athlete into their fold, the Hip-Hop community has increasingly felt the pressure to break down its traditional homophobic barrier and get with the times.
The Grio recently challenged pioneering female rapper MC Lyte with the tough question if rap music was ready to accept a gay rapper on the regular and while she didn’t immediately fancy the thought, she didn’t say it wouldn’t be possible down the line.
“I will never say never,” she told The Grio’s Kyle Harvey. “Kudos is such a corny word but Kudos to all of the people that you just mentioned for being able to live their lives out loud. If that’s what they needed to do in order to feel free, so be it. With [Michael Sam], I don’t know this story but thank you.”
Before launching a successful career in television and voiceover work, MC Lyte was known for her hard-edged rhymes and roughneck demeanor in the late 80s/90s that saw her talents aligned with many of her male counterparts.
Lyte also admitted to liking Macklemore as a person and what he stands for but not necessarily his music. She also touched on Nicki Minaj’s misguided usage of Malcolm X’s image for her single “Lookin’ Ass N***a.”
