The Mayor of East Haven, Connecticut is making headlines for her valiant act of public service, donating her kidney to one of her supporters on Facebook.
Mayor April Capone Almon was running for re-election last year when one of her friends on Facebook posted a status message saying he needed a kidney.
That online friend was 44-year-old Carlos Sanchez who reached out to his friends on the social network for help.
Sanchez who’s kidneys were failing from Diabetes, posted a status saying that all his friends and family had been tested but would not be able to donate a kidney.
That’s when Almon stepped in and sent him a private message saying,
“Hey, I’ll try. I’ll get tested.”
Capone Almon told the Associated Press Wednesday that she thinks the whole thing was divine intervention and she just knew she could help.
“I really felt from the very beginning that I was going to be a match and a donor. I don’t know why, but I just knew it.”
Doctors performed the procedure earlier this month with stellar results, both the Mayor and Sanchez are expected to make full recoveries.
The mayor’s insurance paid for both their surgeries.
