HBO/Cinemax went uptown for a special screening of The Knick, a new series starring Clive Owen and  André Holland of 42 fame.

If the first two episodes that Hip-Hop Wired watched are any indication, The Knick will be a smash. That’s not hyperbole; the show has already been picked up for a second season.

On Wednesday, July 23, 2014, Cinemax hosted a special screening of the new drama series, THE KNICK, from Academy Award and Emmy-winning director Steven Soderbergh, to a VIP audience at The New York Academy of Medicine in Harlem.

A special Q&A and panel discussion followed, featuring one of the stars of the series, André Holland (“42”, ABC’s “Friend’s with Benefits” “Selma”), who delivers a gripping performance as Dr. Algernon Edwards, a gifted African-American Harvard graduate who joins a team of surgeons, steered by Doctor John Thackery, played by Clive Owen. Together they embark on a ground-breaking voyage to save lives, revolutionize medicine and seek reverence in the shadows of corruption and discrimination at an economically challenged, all-white facility.

…Neil Drumming, a culture critic with poignant and entertaining views, moderated the panel, which included Supervising Producer of THE KNICK, Steven Katz. Together they provided guests with an exclusive ticket to journey inside the mind of Dr. Algernon Edwards and the halls of Knickerbocker Hospital.

Attendees enjoyed a dazzling post-screening reception, which included a transcending jazz performance by Mo’ Betta Wu – featuring the multifaceted DJ, television personality and comedienne, Amanda Seales, and composed & arranged by the genre-traversing pianist Kris Bowers.

The Knick premieres on Cinemax on Friday, August 8 at 10 pm ET.

In the spot was Prodigy of Mobb Deep, R&B singer Elle Varner and Teyana Taylor and more. Check out photos of the festivities in the following pages.
