The MTV Video Music Awards took a moment to tribute Mike Brown, and the community of Ferguson, Mo. during Sunday night’s (Aug. 24) ceremony. After accepting Drake’s Best Hip Hop Video award,  Common led a moment of silence for Brown, and “for peace in this country and in the world.”

“For the past two weeks the eyes of the nations have been on Ferguson Mo, the people in Ferguson and St. Louis and communities across the country have used their voices for justice and change,” Common said. “To let everyone know that each and every one of our lives matter.”

MTV doesn’t typically take moments out of its awards shows to side on controversial topics of the kind, but the situation in Ferguson has been a big news story for the last couple of weeks.  The network has also aired a PSA inspired by Ferguson.
