A rapper’s rhymes are typically a mix of personal truth with spoonfuls of perception, and a dash (or heaping helping, depending on who’s cooking the meal) of fantasy. Unfortunately for some MCs, lyrics can manifest into real life struggles.
Some of the best rappers have prophetic qualities. Others wordsmiths simply speak situations into existence without any intentions of doing so. Find examples of both after the jump.

Beanie Sigel
Song: “Purple Rain”
Sigel is a free man. His most recent prison bid partially stemmed from a routine traffic stop, during which he was found with drugs. For all intents and purposes, a bottle of codeine was in his possession.
Big Sean
Song: “Beware”
Sean’s popular track describes a relationship gone awry. Life came at him fast months later when he and his then fiancee Naya Rivera had an ugly public break-up. Then came his new single “IDFWU.”
Slick Rick
Song: “Children’s Story”
“Straight ‘n narrow or yo’ soul gets cast,” said Rick on his classic track. He, however, didn’t follow his own advice and served some time in prison because of it.
G-Dep
Song: “One Way”
Personally speaking, G-Dep was one of the more underrated rappers to sign with Bad Boy. But as he serves a prison bid after confessing to a 1993 murder, we can’t help but acknowledge the line referencing “a shot in the chest” on the song above.
Migos
Song: “Fight Night”
The southern trio are fighting a more pleasurable battle on their popular single. The song’s title also ties into their actual lives in a very literal sense. In other words, mess with the bull that are Migos, and you’ll likely get the horns.
Busta Rhymes
Song: “Legend Of The Fall Offs”
Bussa Buss closed The Big Bang with a track that paints the perfect picture of how artists should bow out gracefully when their time is up. Sadly, eight years later it looks like the Brooklyn native’s future in rap may be resting on his long delayed E.L.E. 2 album.
Eminem
Song: “Rock Bottom”
Track 14 on Em’s major label debut spoke volumes on a prescription pill addiction that he’d battle later on in his career. Eerie stuff.
Drake
Song: “305 To My City”
Drizzy is amid all sorts of controversy, as a list of women, including Houston stripper, Jhonni Blaze, accused the rapper of threatening them. Perhaps he should stay out of the gentlemen’s club for a while.
The Notorious B.I.G.
Song: “Friend Of Mine”
Biggie infamously separated from his wife Faith Evans, after allegations that she slept with Tupac Shakur. *Cues the music*
2Pac Shakur
Song: “Death Around The Corner”
Pac’s prophetic words and enigmatic personality would make him a global icon. But in the end, it was those same qualities that allowed him to call is own untimely passing.
