Growing up in a devout Christian household, secular music wasn’t allowed in D’Angelo’s parents’ humble abode. “Hearing The Commodores’ ‘Brick House’ or Earth, Wind and Fire on the radio, those were the first examples, those incarnations of funk,” the singer said.
