As the country comes down off their holiday hangovers, a Indiana family is still in mourning after a 40-year-old man was killed by his own pit bull on Christmas Day.

The NYDailyNews is reporting that Bianca Rodriguez returned from visiting her family around 5 p.m. to find her husband, Eddie Cahill of Portage, Indiana, lying in the living room covered in dog bites and the couple’s eight-year-old pet, Fat Boy with a bloody mouth.

Local animal control was immediately called and they tasered the Cujo copycat to subdue him. He was later taken into their custody at the Hobart Humane Society and euthanized at the family’s behest. The couple also owns another eight-year-old dog named Kelo.

A police officer on the scene initially wrote that Rodriguez had told Cahill that the dog was “aggressive and unpredictable” and should be given away but the unexpected widow contradicted that statement to WGN News.

“They were playful dogs,” she said. “One slept with the girls and the other slept with me and my husband. “I don’t want people to think bad of pit bulls. It was a freak accident. He loved the dogs.”

Fat Boy had reportedly been given bones prior to the attack but that particular Christmas treat couldn’t be confirmed as the reason for the dog turning on his owner.

Additional pictures of the dog and the Cahill family can be found on the next pages.
