Trevor Noah has been embroiled in a brewing controversy that was sparked almost immediately after he was announced to take over hosting duties at Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Noah’s Twitter feed and the jokes featured have been under scrutiny, but several stars have stepped up to defend the comedian in solidarity.

Noah took to Twitter to briefly address the criticism he’s faced after a series of jokes he posted on his timeline apparently offended. The tweets, some over four years old, didn’t seem too offensive to some for a stand-up comedian, but many hold The Daily Show to a much higher moral standard. Noah, to his credit, bravely addressed the fervor.

“To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian,” tweeted Noah Tuesday (Mar. 31). A quick look at Noah’s timeline also revealed that he had support from other celebrities who felt that the hunt to destroy Noah’s credibility after being named Jon Stewart’s replacement was overstated.

Actor and stand-up comic Patton Oswalt fired off a 53-tweet barrage in defense of Noah and the genre of comedy, which Noah retweeted to his followers. In fact, Oswalt brilliantly dismantled the argument that what Noah did was as heinous as everyone’s been saying.

Director and film producer Seth McFarlane, Daniel Tosh, and others all chimed in with salient views on what’s occurred over the past two days.
