Incoming Boston University sociology professor Dr. Saida Grundy caught backlash after she made a tweet aimed at what she referred to as “white masculinity” and its influence in the academic world. Dr. Grundy has since apologized for the tweet, prompting the school’s president to also chime and hopefully open a careful discussion on race.

Grundy wrote a tweet on her now private account reading, “White masculinity is THE problem for America’s colleges,” and the reaction from naysayers was almost immediate. The response was so robust that many deemed her comments racist and have called for Grundy to be fired ahead of her first day on the job. Grundy, in a statement viewed by the Associated Press, gave her apology while noting she neglected to offer context along with her pointed statement.

Boston University president Robert A. Brown sent out an email to staff and students May 12, highlighting the fervor around Grundy’s statement. In the letter, Brown acknowledged the nature of Grundy’s words and how they may have been offensive. However, he did offer the opportunity to have a longer discussion with Grundy and will share conversations with students.

The incident has sparked the #IStandWithSaida hashtag on social media, with many showing support for Grundy by highlighting recent events of racism and the widespread divisiveness it causes.

Grundy will begin her work at the university on July 1.
