The Los Angeles Lakers have announced that they will be honoring future NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal with a statue at the Staples Center. What took so long?

“We look forward to having Shaq join the other legends who have been honored with statues at Staples Center,” said Lakers President Jeanie Buss via a press statement. “He is a giant not only in size, but also in stature and in what he accomplished as a Laker. Shaq literally broke the ground for the site, and was hugely responsible for not only getting Staples Center built, but for making it one of the most successful and famous arenas in the world. It’s an honor that is well deserved.”

Shaq helped lead the Lakers to three NBA championships during his tenure (1996-2004) with the team. Teaming this guy named Kobe Bryant, the Lakers won three chips in a row (2000, 2001, 2002).

Reportedly, the statue will be unveiled sometime during the 2016-2017 season.
