Yasiin Bey is the kind of guy who plays by his own rules, even in court. Bey was commissioned to South Africa’s Bellville Magistrate Court today (March 8) to face accusations that he used a fake passport, and was abruptly turned away for refusing to remove his turban.

In a small compromise, 42-year-old Bey left the court and returned with the same scarf, only this time it was loosely draped over his head, and neck.

Prosectors moved to postpone the hearing for two more weeks, reports Okay Africa. Bey, born Dante Terrell Smith, is charged with false identity and “aiding and abetting his family” to remain the county illegally.

Bey and his family relocated to South Africa in 2013, their visas expired the next year. The Brooklyn native has denied wrongdoing and remains free on bail of 5,000 rand (which is less than $400).

He heads back to court March 24.
