Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam, America’s first female Muslim judge was found floating the Hudson River Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple reports say that witnesses spotted her body near West 132nd Street and Henry Hudson Parkway around 1:45 p.m. The NYPD Harbor Unit rescued Abdus-Salaam’s body from the river and called medics which pronounced her dead at the scene.

Judge Abdus-Salaam’s husband filed a missing person’s report on Tuesday. Her body showed no signs of trauma and will be transferred to a medical center to determine the official cause of death.

Abdus-Salaam, as appointed to the State Court of Appeals by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2013. Making her not only the first African-American woman, but the country’s first female Muslim judge. Abdus-Salaam attended law school at Columbia University with former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in the 1970s.

A police investigation is underway. Authorities believe her death may have been a suicide.
