Murder charges have finally come down on NYPD Sgt. Hugh Barry for the 2016 shooting of a mentally ill woman named Deborah Danner in her Castle Hill apartment in the Bronx.

According to Raw Story this indictment is the first time that an NYPD officer has faced a murder charge since 1999, when four police officers fired 41 shots at an unarmed Amadou Diallo.

The shooting took place on October 18, 2016, when Barry responded to a call of a mentally ill woman who was acting “irrationally” in her apartment. When Barry arrived he found the 66-year-old Danner was brandishing a pair of scissors before the responding officer was able to get her to drop them. Unfortunately, the schizophrenic Danner picked up a baseball bat and charged towards the officer before being shot twice in the torso. She was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Deborah Danner struggled with her schizophrenia for decades and even penned an essay in 2012 in which she foretold of her fate at the hands of a quick on the trigger police officer.

Though The New York City Sergeants Benevolent Association criticized the grand jury’s indictment and stated that Barry’s action were well within the rules of an officer saving his own life, New York City Mayor de Blasio blasted the officer’s actions saying “Sgt. Barry disregarded his training by the NYPD, his training as an officer, his training as a sergeant, in dealing with emotional disturbed persons by rushing in to Ms. Danner’s apartment.” If you thought the officers of the NYPD hated this mayor before…

The eight-year veteran NYPD Sgt. Hugh Barry faces 25-to-life for the murder of Deborah Danner but if history has taught us anything it’s that justice is rigged for those in power.
