Just one year after topping the Billboard charts with his critically-acclaimed Layers album, Royce 5’9 returns with The Bar Exam.

It doesn’t sound like Royce is very impressed with what he’s been hearing in Hip-Hop as of late. On The Bar Exam hosted by DJ Green Lantern, Royce waste no time offering his commentary on the state of the culture.

Powered by skits of audio featuring everyone from Jay-Z to Tupac Shakur to C. Delores Tucker to Ice-T, Royce takes listeners on a journey examining just how far the game has come, and how backward it seems to be sounding.

For instance, on the “‘Pac Skit” we hear the late-rapper issuing a warning and damn near a prophecy of what Hip-Hop can turn into if the real ones don’t speak up.

“It depends on the n*gga’s balls,” the skit starts. “If a n*gga got big nuts like me, it’s gonna get way harder, but if a n*gga got little nuts it’s gonna start getting back to a different type of rap: partying and f*cking and that type of sh*t because that’s what we talk about when they don’t let us talk about what we really want to talk about.”

Royce backs this up by doing the complete opposite and delivering bars with guests like Slaughterhouse, Westside Gunn and Conway, Nick Grant and Elzhi checking in.

If bars are your thing, this is a must listen.
