Hearts are heavy in the Washington, D.C. region as local graffiti legend Danny Hogg, best known by his tag Cool “Disco” Dan, has died. Filmmaker Roger Gastman announced the tragic news via his Instagram page Friday (July 28).

Gastman, who co-directed the documentary The Legend Of Cool “Disco” Dan, wrote the following on his IG page:

With heavy hearts, we are saddened to report that Danny Hogg, known worldwide as Cool “Disco” Dan, passed away on July 26, 2017 due to complications from diabetes.

We are devastated by the tragic news of Dan’s untimely death. We are honored to have known Dan, to have been a part of his journey, and most of all to have been able to tell his story and call him a friend.

While Hogg wasn’t known for lavish pieces like many in the graffiti community, his tag was unavoidable across the region in the 80’s and 90’s. Hogg was largely reclusive, but the documentary humanized the man behind the ubiquitous tag.

Hogg was 48.

Rest powerfully in peace, Cool “Disco” Dan.
