Hollywood’s racist undercurrent has long been felt without actually being acknowledge. It wasn’t until the whole #OscarsSoWhite backlash that people began calling out Tinseltown for their blatant racial bias.
Now Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star Chloe Bennet has become the latest actress to put Hollywood’s racism on blast in a social media response to a fan questioning her decision to change her last name from Wang to Bennet.
“Changing my last name doesn’t change the fact that my BLOOD is half Chinese, that I lived in China, speak Mandarin or that I was culturally raised both American and Chinese. It means I had to pay my rent, and Hollywood is racist and wouldn’t cast me with a last name that made them uncomfortable.”
Chloe also took to IG to praise actor Ed Skrein’s decision to step down from a role he landed in the reboot to Hellboy after people began to accuse the studio of whitewashing yet another role meant for someone of Asian heritage.
“DAMN, that’s a man. Thank you @edskrein for standing up against hollywoods continuous insensitivity and flippant behavior towards the Asian American community.”

DAMN, that's a man. Thank you @edskrein for standing up against hollywoods continuous insensitivity and flippant behavior towards the Asian American community. There is no way this decision came lightly on your part, so thank you for your bravery and genuinely impactful step forward. I hope this inspires other actors/film makers to do the same.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼–Also, dayum cute af AND a pioneer for social injustice?! Fellas, take note. That's how it's done.
While some people have attacked Chloe for her comments on social media by either calling her a sellout or simply mad that she’s addressing racism, it remains to be seen how this will impact her career going forward.
Hopefully, the talented actress doesn’t get the Colin Kaepernick treatment where good intentions lead to bad consequences courtesy of those in charge.
