Charles Manson, the infamous American cult leader who orchestrated some of the most gruesome crimes in the nation’s history, has died. Manson’s “helter-skelter” plan to hatch a race war led to the murder of actress Sharon Tate and others with members of his Manson Family cult carrying out the killings.

TMZ.com reports:

Charles Manson — the man who masterminded one of the most heinous murder sprees in American history — is dead … this according to the sister of his famous victim.

Debra Tate tells TMZ she received a call from the prison telling her Manson died 8:13 PM Sunday.

We’re told the prison is contacting all of the victims’ families.

Manson died of natural causes, according to prison officials.

Manson was recently wheeled into Bakersfield hospital and escorted by 5 uniformed cops. Our sources had said at the time, “It’s just a matter of time.” He was covered in blankets and looked ashen in the gurney.

According to the outlet, Manson was sick in January and taken from the Corcoran State Prison to get treatment for intestinal bleeding. Jailed since 1969, Manson had become something of a legend and brought unwanted attention to famed music group The Beatles as Manson was inspired to bring about the “helter-skelter” race war because of their song of the same name.

Some of Manson’s “family” cult are still imprisoned, and some are hoping to have their sentences ended on the basis that they were coerced and under the influence of their late leader.

Manson was 83.
