Tegan and Sara Singer Calls Out Rapper Tyler for Homophobic Lyrics

Odd Future’s Tyler, The Creator is well on his way to dethroning Kanye West as the most hated man in hip-hop.

Indie singer Sara Quin of the band Tegan and Sara, is latest figure to take a stance against Tyler’s offense, anti-gay and misogynistic lyrics, while criticizing the entertainment media for embracing his music.

“When will misogynistic and homophobic ranting and raving result in meaningful repercussions in the entertainment industry?” Quin asks in her letter entitled “A CALL FOR CHANGE.”

“It is not without great hesitation and hand wringing that I enter into the discourse about Tyler, the media who glorifies and excuses misogyny and homophobia, and the community of artists that doesn’t seem remotely bothered by it. I can only hope that someone reading this might be inspired to speak out. At the very least, I will know that my voice is on the record.”

Sara Quin’s entire letter can be read here.

In support of Quin’s letter, GLAAD released the following statement:

“GLAAD stands by its statement and continues to hold artists across all genres accountable for the messages they send to fans. We commend Sara Quin for speaking out publicly against Tyler’s lyrics and hope others will follow in her steps. GLAAD will continue to monitor media coverage of Tyler.”

Quin and GLAAD can kick and scream all they want, but don’t expect a response or for Tyler, The Creator to change his lyrical content anytime soon.

He’s somewhere overseas celebrating the 50,000 copies of his new album Goblin that he sold last week.

No matter how offense or misogynistic Tyler’s lyrics are, someone out there is paying to hear them.
