Ever wonder where all the women in Hip Hop have gone? Intermedia Arts has too but they’ve decided to be proactive and celebrate the contributions of B-Girls to Hip-Hop in the meantime. Part of the celebration is the “B-Girl Be Block Party” to be held on September 19th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The fourth annual all-day festival at Intermedia Arts brings international, national and local girls and women in Hip-Hop together in Minneapolis for music, dance, live mural painting, film and an art marketplace. Before, during and after the block party, B-Girl Be presents a series of Hip Hop Dance Showcase, performances and guest artist workshops curated by local dancer and choreographer Amy Sackett.

According to featured artist Laurie Lyons, “McNally Smith College of Music has donated a $10,000 scholarship to a B-girl participant for the McNally Smith’s Diploma program in Hip-Hop Studies. The program is for prospective students who want to explore and develop in a cross-departmental curriculum that covers music, recording technology, language, music history, and music business.”

“The B-Girl Be festival is the only arts festival in the world solely dedicated to the contributions of women in Hip-Hop. The mission of B-Girl Be is to influence and inspire leadership to change the perceptions and roles of women in hip-hop for current and future generations…. Past participants have included Lady Pink, Martha Cooper, Faith47 and Roxanne Shante”

If you value women in Hip Hop and Hip Hop in general it’s always a good time to celebrate and nurture talent.
