A brewing situation in the Dominican Republic involving tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants has reached an unfortunate climax. The immigrants, over 90 percent Haitian, face deportation back to Haiti as a deadline to apply for legal status passes today (Jun. 17).

Tragedy struck the 2015 Haiti Carnival after an accident involving a power line left at least 20 people dead. According to an eyewitness account, a person atop the float moved a power line out of its way for passage thus leading to some of the deaths by way of electrocution.
