Club Puts Ban On "Fat Women": No Big Girls Allowed

A nightclub in Montreal, has supposedly put a ban on overweight women, leaving a lot of club goers and partiers upset.

The invitation was posted last week on the Facebook page of Muzique, a posh nightclub on St. Laurent Blvd., and included the ban on "fat girls," followed by the emoticon of a winking smiley face.

Although a Montreal nightclub is distancing itself from an invitation on its Facebook page that specified "NO FAT GIRLS ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!," people familiar with the local party scene say clubs regularly, if not so overtly, discriminate based on looks all the time.

Owner of SMAN Productions, a Montreal promotions company said:


"Everybody knows. Clubs are selective.  A nightclub that wants to attract a certain kind of crowd will never openly turn people away based on weight, he said, but if people don't fit in with the club's look, a bouncer can still find some excuse to turn them away -whether it's a long wait time, an expensive bottle service fee or claiming the club is at capacity,”

The party was to celebrate the birthday of one of the club's partners on Saturday. The invitation was taken down on the weekend.

"When I saw it, I freaked out. I was livid," said one plus-size woman who received the message as a member of Muzique's Facebook group.

Speaking on condition that her name not be used, the woman said her weight has never stopped her from going out, but she won't be visiting Muzique if it discriminates against people who are overweight.

    Such a idiot! Big women are probably the one's keeping your club going. Nothing wrong with a plus size woman enjoying herself & I'm sure they'll gladly go to another club. He's OPENLY discriminating & I honestly think he should be put out of business.

    I agree with the clubs policy. Any woman that's let's herself go like that should be ashamed. Who wants to hit that. I admit I hit a big woman before but once she put that big leg across me trying to cuddle I couldn't take it. I felt trapped, couldn't turn or nothing without it being a struggle.

    No one should be turned away from a club because of their size - thats like turning away people for being ugly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some ripped men who hit the gym every week that like heavy women. Its preference. Foolishness.

    First of all, it's a joke, and I'm not offended at all... maybe because I haven't stood in line for a club since I was old enough to get in (I'm 26 now and one baby later nothing has changed) or maybe because it's not that serious there's 50 other clubs and u can always talk with your wallet. Clubs have always been selective, though, this is just the first time someone has said it out loud. Put your best foot forward, just saying. But if we are going there, the real question is fat by urban or mainstream standards?? ... we all know there is a difference

    Beauty maybe in the eye of the beholder, but fat is fat no matter where you go. Instead of getting indignant, maybe the fat he*****rs should use this as motivation to shed a couple hundred pounds.What good is being fat doing for anyone? it is unhealthy, you take up too much *****e on public transportation and you are an eyesore. I am 130lbs and you best believe that if I find myself getting out of shape I am increasing my excersice routine, there is no excuse for letting yourself go.

But lets no discriminate cause just like not all over weight people have bad health or lack food control, not all skinny women are healthy and have food control. Think about that?!

    Did that make you feel better? did venting on me perhaps kept you away from the tub of ice cream you normally use to soothe your insecurities??

    I am well aware that just being skinny does not equate with being fit, and no where did I state otherwise in my comment. I am also well aware that 130lbs does not look good on everyone. My problem is this growing lack of care in general, we are becoming a nation where anything is acceptable, people are walking out of their house in pajamas and rollers, grooming themselves in public...this same lack of care is killing us, how could you not want to be your best self? how could you hate yourself so much that you wont try to be fit, knowing the health concerns attached to obesity? (and notice I am specifically talking about obisity)

    This is not the time to try to be nice or sensitive, because obviously that is not working. We as a country has the highest rate of obisity in the world! and that affects everyone in the long term.

    I am not telling anyone to go out there and kill themselves trying to be Paris Hilton, but you have to work to put YOUR best foot forward at all time.

    Actually, clubs discriminate all the time based on looks (if not as openly as the club in the article), and it's largely a business decision. The big spenders prefer to go clubs full of slim, beautiful women--it's as elementary as that. A bar near my old neighborhood was nicknamed "the pigpen" because of the number of fat women who could be seen on a typical Saturday night--needless to say the bar has zero prestige. Harsh, maybe, but life can be cruel at times. If you ban open discrimination, clubs will simply find other excuses to turn away homely, overweight people. Short of implementing a ugly or fat quota, I don't see any way of getting clubs to do something that's going to hurt their business, especially when many places are sttuggling as it is.
