George Zimmerman made his first appearance in a Florida courtroom Thursday (April 12), where he was informed that he will face second-degree murder charges, for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Looking somber yet coherent, the 28-year-old wore a gray prison jumpsuit, and stood next to his attorney Mark O’Mara, only speaking twice, to answer Judge Mark Herr, when asked to do so. Herr noted probable cause as the reasoning behind  moving forward with the murder case, and scheduled Zimmerman to head back to court next month. Prosecutors will argue that on the night in question, Zimmerman “confronted Martin and a struggle ensued.”

Following the hearing, O’Mara held a press conference in which she stated he will pursue a bond hearing for his client “in the next few weeks.”

Since the shooting on Feb. 26, Zimmerman remained in hiding, but launched a website last weekend, asking supporters for donations. He turned himself in to authorities yesterday, before special prosecutor Angel Corey announced that the neighborhood watch volunteer would be charged with murder for shooting and killing the unarmed teen. “I can tell you we did not come to this decision lightly. We prosecute based on the facts of any given case as well as the laws of the state of Florida,” she said before explaining that Zimmerman was set to appear in court 24-hours after surrendering.

Zimmerman is expected to enter a not guilty plea in the case. He is due back in court for arraignment, May 29 where he will go before Judge Jessica Recksiedler.
