A high school in Louisiana has the public in an uproar over its “whites only” reunions. St. Martinville Senior High School has been holding segregated events, and its forthcoming party—bringing together the class of 1973— will be the first integrated reunion in the history of the school.
What organizers probably didn’t bank on was their dirty little secret of yesteryear leaking to the ‘Net and causing an understandable backlash. This year’s invitation reads, “A 5:30 p.m. reception, the 7 p.m. homecoming football game; and an ‘after game get together: (white graduates only).”
The reunion is scheduled to kick-off Sept. 21.
Michael Kreamer, the school’s principal has been bombarded with phone calls, and noted that the controversy is not the best publicity for St. Martinville. Kreamer was just informed of the racist invitation Friday (Aug. 31) and was previously unaware of the “white’s only” rule. “I’m just a little disappointed that something like this comes up. I don’t think it looks good for the school but…it has nothing to do with St. Martinville Senior High, so I hope people don’t take that the wrong way.”
One of the event’s organizers, Liza Chance also doesn’t get why things have become such a hot topic. “This year, 2012 was going to be the first year they we were going to integrate it,” she said. “I don’t understand why this went the way it did.”
Although segregation may not be as publicly practiced as it was 40 years ago, examples of racism between Whites and minorities are all over the place; but every incident doesn’t go unnoticed. As previously reported, a Philadelphia swim club were awarded $1.1 million for being barred from using a pool because the group was comprised of Black and Latino children.
