Bill Clinton went over his allotted time during his speech at the Democratic National Convention, Wednesday (Sept. 5) but judging by the crowd reaction, they were fine with him disregarding the time constraints. For the second night in a row, the audience was riled up by a speaker urging them to sign on to support President Obama for another for years.

During Clinton’s 49-minute address he outlined much of what Obama has done during his first term. “One of the main reasons America should re-elect President Obama is that he is still committed to cooperation,” he said. “He appointed Republican Secretaries of Defense, the Army and Transportation. He appointed a Vice President who ran against him in 2008, and trusted him to oversee the successful end of the war in Iraq and the implementation of the recovery act.”

The commander in chief has not fulfilled all of the goals he set out to achieve during his 2008 campaign, and Clinton explained why. “He inherited a deeply damaged economy, put a floor under the crash, began the long hard road to recovery, and laid the foundation for a modern, more well-balanced economy that will produce millions of good new jobs, vibrant new businesses, and lots of new wealth for the innovators.“Are we where we want to be? No. Is the President satisfied? No. Are we better off than we were when he took office, with an economy in free fall, losing 750,000 jobs a month. The answer is YES.”

With First Lady Michelle Obama watching in the audience, the president made a surprise appearance shaking hands with Clinton and thanking him. The president will give his highly anticipated speech tonight, and coming off his wife’s stellar address, it will be a tough act to follow.
