Hector “Macho” Camacho, a Puerto Rican boxer known for his exceptional ring ability as well as his flashy entrances and costumes, was declared dead on Saturday. He was 50.

The former boxer had been battling for his life since Tuesday after he was shot while sitting in a parked car outside a bar with a friend in the city of Bayamon.  The friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, died at the scene of the shooting.

San Juan Police said Mojica had nine small bags of cocaine in his pocket and a 10th bag was found open in the car.

Inside the ring, the Puerto Rican born, Spanish Harlem raised fighter won three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur, and after turning pro, he quickly became a contender with his flashy yet effective style of boxing. Camacho boasted a 38-0 record until 1991 when he was defeated Greg Haugen at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

He had a career record of 79-6-3.
