A 24-year-old Birmingham,  Ala. woman was gunned down while holding her 10-day-old son Monday (April 29) afternoon. According to police, the victim was hit by a stray bullet.

Sherri Williams was standing in the doorway of her apartment in the neighborhood known as Gate City, when she got caught in a gun battle. Williams was hit in the chest, and collapsed backwards with her newborn still in her arms. The baby was uninjured.

Police say the shooting was the end result of a fight between two men at a store nearby. One was chasing the other down the street and firing his gun at the same time, ultimately striking Williams. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities are reaching out to the public to help solve the case.

“It’s even more sad because she was holding her infant in her arms, when she was shot.  Fortunately, the baby was not injured,” Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams told My Fox Alabama.  “We need the public to step forward on this, give us all the information they have so we can get this person off the street.”

Williams has two other children, a 4-year-old son, and a 6-year-old daughter. The boy witnessed the shooting, while his sister was in school at the time.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the city’s homicide unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. All tips will remain anonymous.
