The human remains found in Queens have been confirmed to be that of Avonte Oquendo. The NY medical examiner confirmed that body parts found along the East River are that of the missing teen.

According to the Associated Press, the “cause and manner” of the 14-year-old boy’s death is still pending investigation.

Oquendo went missing after walking out of school in Long Island City on October 4, 2014. He was autistic and unable to care for himself on his own, and a massive manhunt ensued.

The remains were found by a teen photographer on a College Point, Queens beach and the clothing found on the arm, torso and legs matched the ones Oquendo was last seen wearing. The boy’s mother provided a DNA sample that ultimately confirmed it indeed was her missing son.

Our condolences go out to the Oquendo family.
