Nike took a page out of their 1990s catalog with the return of Penny Hardaway’s miniature loud mouth sidekick Lil Penny a few days ago. The figurine has since taken over Nike Basketball’s Twitter and Instagram accounts, uploaded selfies, and is updating followers as he treks through New Orleans during NBA All-Star Weekend 2014.
It appears that Lil Penny arrived at the Big Easy by air, and not by airplane per se. “It’s me! Li’l Penny! You don’t know my repertoire? You’re not familiar with my work? I’m a living legend. I’m your favorite player’s favorite player. I’m a baller, a lover, a poet. Any questions? #lilpenny,” read his first message on Instagram.
At the moment, it’s unknown if Lil Penny will also appear in future Nike ads. We’re all for it though. All we ask is that Chris Rock reprise the role to recapture that classic 90s feel.
