Iyanla Vanzant and her Iyanla: Fix My Life program has been the center of discussion after she spoke with Jay Williams, a man who fathered 34 children with 17 different women. Vanzant up the stakes by inviting five other Black men who fathered 87 children between them with 50 different women including Williams in that number.

Williams has been the focus of several broadcasts of Vanzant’s show, but the addition of the other men added greater impact to the ongoing narrative of the irresponsibility of some Black fathers. While social media and others have cracked several jokes about the Williams’ prolific baby-making abilities, Vanzant has been attempting to get to the bottom of the habits of these men as they continually kept impregnating women.

One of the men, Nathaniel, has 28 children of his own and was emotional when Vanzant performed an exercise with him and Williams onstage in front of an studio audience of all women. An especially powerful moment was when Vanzant confronted Nathaniel as a single Black mother herself, and challenged him on the spot to own up to his mistakes. Throughout the audience, women were reduced to tears.

Oprah Winfrey was also struck at Vanzant’s efforts to help these fathers, tweeting out to her massive Twitter network a clip of the show Monday afternoon.  Vanzant also wrote an editorial regarding Williams for Winfrey’s website.
