The current author of James Bond books (RIP Ian Fleming), thinks Idris Elba is too “street” and not “suave” enough to play the iconic spy character on the big screen. Idris. Elba.

Twitter, and just about anyone with common sense, strongly disagrees. Anthony Horowitz, author of a new James Bond novel called Trigger Mortis, is who made the highly suspect commentary, while copping pleas.

Reports the Huff Post:

In comments reported by the Mail Online, Horowitz said: “Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better,” [Horowitz names Adrian Lester, star of Hustle as his preferred choice.]

He adds: “For me Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.”

Elba for his part, has made no secret of his desire to play Bond, though earlier this year the 42-year-old lamented he no longer believed it was a possibility.

Next time, just say you’d rather James Bond be a white guy, okay? Also, Adrian Lester? Fine actor, but c’mon son.

The current James Bond, in film, is actor Daniel Craig.

Check out Twitter’s reaction to the latest Idris Elba as James Bond and barely veiled racism news below and on the flip. Worth noting is that Elba has a legion of supporters across all races, particularly thirsty women (no shade).
