Kendrick Lamar had the Internet on fire yesterday thanks to his verse on Big Sean’s “Control.” While promoting his just made available commercially single with Baauer, “Higher” featuring Jay Z, we asked Just Blaze to weigh in on the verse’s impact on the rap game. The “U Don’t Know” producer and DJ also mentioned having to get some beats over to a certain Toronto rapper.
The debates are still going on about whether the artists name checked in K. Dot’s rhymes, including Pusha T, J. Cole, A$AP Rocky and more, should or should not lyrically retaliate. There is also back and forth about who from NYC should respond–Joell Ortiz already has–since the Compton rapper claimed to be the “King of New York.”
As for Just Blaze, he thinks some artists are taking things out of context and maybe too personally. “The verse is amazing,” Just Blaze told Hip-Hop Wired of Lamar’s fiery bars. “The fact that he named names is great. But I don’t think he was naming names in a way like, I’m playing y’all or I’m coming at y’all. It was, Y’all are all my homies, but check this out I’m about to crush every one of y’all and be number one. I mean really, who aspires to be number two?”
He added, “I didn’t take it as an open call to battler everyone and anyone. So some of the reactions I’ve seen are a little bit of an overreaction.”
Perhaps more importantly, Just Blaze needs to finish up some music for one of the MC’s Lamar named; Drake.
“The main thing in my brain right now is these three beats I need to finish and get to Drake. I just haven’t had time. They’re halfway there and I just got to get them done,” revealed Just, who is also executive producing Slaughterhouse’s new album. With Drake’s Nothing Was The Same album due out September 17, let’s hope Just gets crackin’.
