Politics aren’t for the faint of heart. When abiding officials don’t get their way, there may be hellfire and/or temper-tantrums to pay.
Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings went totally ballistic today after ex-IRS official Lois Lerner invoked her right to plead the 5th Amendment during a hearing where she stood accused of abusing her position to target Tea Party groups.
Following her refusal to potentially self-incriminate herself in front of the House Oversight Committee,
Republican Rep. Darrell Issa announced, “Seeking the truth is the obligation of this committee; I see no point in going forward; I have no expectation that Ms. Lerner will cooperate with this committee–” before being interrupted by Rep. Cummings, who “procedural questions” were so immediate, he made sure he was heard loud and clear.
“You just can’t run a committee like this,” the soured politician expressed. “We’re better than this as country.”

Anyway, there was no surprise here. Everyone expected that – without immunity – this was exactly what Lerner would do. The interesting part came after she clammed up and a visibly frustrated Issa adjourned the hearing.
It seems ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings had planned on doing some of his patented “inane grandstanding,” and Issa derailed his intentions. Cummings would not be denied. First, he tried to pretend that he had a legitimate question, but then immediately launched into his standard set of rambling talking points. So, Issa dismissed everyone in the room and cut the power to Cummings’ microphone.
This triggered a meltdown that rivalled the Fukushima reactor. Seriously. Cummings completely lost it.
“I AM A MEMBER OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” He bellowed. “AND I AM TIRED OF THIS!!!”
