As authorities have begun to crack down heavily on crime within New York, law enforcement has nabbed 14 members and associates, reportedly of the Gambino family.

With crimes ranging from sex trafficking to murder and racketeering, the charges placed against the members were discussed during a news conferences Tuesday.  According to U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, this would be the first time that any crime family faced claims of setting up an interstate sex trafficking ring.

Charges surrounding the allegations of sex trafficking include a 15-year-old girl and authorities are reporting that all the women involved were under the age of 20.

The charges of murder stem back to the late 1990s, after members of the family suspected that a nephew of one of their captains was cooperating with the government, and initiated a plot to kill him, according to authorities.

Reports are stating that after receiving permission from the captain, the imprisoned Daniel Marino, the nephew, 31, was lured into a strip club in Staten Island where he was shot and killed, according to prosecutors.

“As today’s case shows, the rumors of the Mafia’s demise are greatly exaggerated,” Bharara said

These two cases are only the tip as they represent “literally decades of criminality”.  With some of the charges announced Monday, claims of extortion, gambling, loan sharking marijuana and cocaine trafficking was placed against the family.
