Over the 2014 BET Awards weekend, we caught up with XXL Freshman Rich Homie Quan and Def Jam signee Trinidad James, both of whom had much to say about a proper debut album.

Fans have been waiting for an official LP from Trinidad James ever since he released his breakthrough mixtape Don’t Be S.A.F.E.(Sensitive as Fuck Everyday). And while Rich Homie Quan expressed to us the importance of delivering a full-length compilation, Trinidad made clear he’s going to take his sweet time to perfect his major-label debut. “I’m still working on it, and I’m a little slow to be honest,” he said. “[But] I’ve been working on it and it’s all on me.”

Rich Homie Quan, whose stellar chops live only on mixtapes and a slew of hit songs, later expounded on why today’s rap artists still need to deliver their fans an official studio project.

“I’m going to debut my first album. I don’t know when, but I do feel that you do have to drop an album,” said the Atlanta rapper. “Only so your fans can know who you really are.”

See the full interview in the video below, where Rich and Trinidad talk major-label buzz and getting discovered, respectively.
