Sylvester Stallone’s trilogy-closing The Expendables 3 experienced some fairly paltry numbers to the tune of $15 at the box office this past weekend. Naturally, it happened after it was leaked online in crystal clear quality.
The Expendables run may be officially even though Stallone is accustomed being the centerpiece of long-running franchises. Excipio found that the film was downloaded nearly 200,000 times in the first 24 hours of the leak.
According to The Wrap, analysts and pundits still projected the film, which also stars Wesley Snipes and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to rake in on the upward of $20 million but apparently that didn’t happen.
Despite speculation that the male-driven action saga is wearing thin with viewers, there’s no denying it had its work cut out for itself with the skyrocketing success of Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Marvel fantasy flick eclipsed the $200 million mark over the weekend and the heroes in a half shell are closing on $100 million during their second weekend in theaters.
A potential silver lining in recouping the $90 million production budget is that the series had done exceptionally well overseas. Of course, this doesn’t bode well for the possibility of a fourth movie of unadulterated testosterone.
