A grand jury will not indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch announced the grand jury’s decision during a press conference late Monday (Nov. 24).
Over the last three months the grand jury has heard testimony and viewed evidences so as to complete what McCulloch called a “thorough” investigation of the incidents that led to Brown’s shooting, and whether or not there was probable cause to indict Wilson.
Brown’s family released the following statement after the announcement was made:
We are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequence of his actions. While we understand that many others share our pain, we ask that you channel your frustration in ways that will make a positive change. We need to work together to fix the system that allowed this to happen.
Different news sources revealed earlier in the evening that Wilson wasn’t expected to turn himself in, and therefore would not be charged. The 28-year-old recently got married but has reportedly said that he would step down from the police department if no charges were filed.
