The police officers who frequent Ferguson are likely set to face more scrutiny as a result of their tactical judgement calls. As of today, they can no longer hide behind Darren Wilson, seeing that he took the back door exit.

On Tuesday, November 25, Dornella Conner, 24, was riding in the passenger seat of her 21-year-old boyfriend DeAngelas Lee’s car when he allegedly drove at an officer at a Ferguson gas station where a 20-30 people crowd had gathered. According to a probable cause statement by St. Louis County police, the targeted detective shot a bean bag round into the front passenger-side window of the white sedan, in fear for his life. The round ruptured Conner’s left eye, sending glass and other debris into the socket as well. Conner is also a few months pregnant but her fetus was unharmed in the incident.

Conner’s father, Donnell of O’Fallon, MO told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. that his daughter is now permanently blinded in her left eye and is having trouble focusing with her right.

“I see her like this and I am hurt and confused,” he said. “She’s very depressed. Very emotional. Like the young people do, in support, like kids do, but no violence, not looting. She just wanted to be there,” he continued in reference to her and Lee’s presence in Ferguson.

Lee, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and is being held in lieu of $50,000, cash-only bail. Court documents allege that he admitted that he intentionally drove his car at the officer, but Dornella insisted that wasn’t the case.

According to the Post-Dispatch, the blinded young woman declined to be interviewed but still shared her opinion on how the events transpired on her social media accounts.

“I will have justices for what they did too me but I happy im alive thank u Jesus love u everyone,” she said on Facebook under an alias. She also said that her and boyfriend weren’t looting or even protesting for that matter. She alleges they stopped at the gas station to get gas and snacks for the trip back home and police cars blocked her boyfriend’s car.

Donnell Conner says the family has been helping Dornella take her medicine and change her bandages in lieu of the fact that her next career endeavor for warehouse work is all but unfathomable at this point.
