Alva Braziel is yet the latest Black man killed by way of an officer-involved shooting this week. Braziel was reportedly shot 10 times early this morning while allegedly brandishing and aiming a firearm at Houston police officers in the Texas city’s South Side section.
Houston’s ABC13 reports:
The shooting happened on Cullen near Ward around 12:40am. Officers say they saw a man with a revolver standing in the road. There were two officers in one vehicle and they asked the man to put the revolver down. Police say a witness also asked him to drop the weapon. Officers say instead of dropping the gun, the man raised his weapon pointing it in the air. He then lowered it and pointed it at the two officers.
Immediately after, HPD says they each fired multiple shots and he died at the scene.
A woman who says she’s the man’s wife identified him as Alva Braziel.
The officers were wearing body cams during the incident and evidence is still being collected and investigated. Outrage over the shooting event has been ongoing since the news broke and the family and others are seeking answers. There is also video evidence from a nearby gas station that will also offer some perspective.
Tensions in Texas have been in the wake of the Thursday sniper shooting incident in Dallas that took the lives of five police officers.
We’ve gathered tweets under the hashtag #AlvaBraziel and discussions have been intense thus far. People are largely skeptical of early reports and Houston police have yet to confirm the early reports.
