2 Chainz shoots his heat check and banks one in with his latest project Daniel Son; Necklace Don.

On his second mixtape this year and third project overall 2 Chainz is probably having the best year of his career since 2012. In the time since Based On A True Story, Chainz sounded like he was just trying to navigate through the new star-infested waters that he was thrown in, putting out projects that simply acted as placeholders. Other times it sounded like he was purposely taking a back seat to promote other artists signed to his company.

But on Daniel Son; Necklace Don 2 Chainz sounds like a refreshed artist. Returns to his knack for making absurd metaphors on “Chirp” and seems to be reminding himself of what he’s here for on “Get Out Of Bed.” He also continues to show his ability to bridge eras with the subtle use of LL Cool J’s “I Need Love” flow on “Blessings.” Overall he’s gotten back to basics instead of running up the Def Jam check on big name producers and forced features and he sounds better for it.
