The news that Albert “Prodigy” Johnson of Mobb Deep fame has died is still rippling through social media, with colleagues and fans alike of the crew pouring out their hearts. The Hip-Hop community has taken to Twitter, Instagram, and other outlets to express their grief for the 42-year-old wordsmith, who was battling sickle cell anemia for much of his life.

Since earlier this afternoon (June 20), tweets from Hip-Hop luminaries and fans have been increasing since the confirmation of Prodigy’s passing. With some expressing shock and even disbelief, many are settling into the sad reality that one of the genre’s most notable voices and figures has died. The Long Island native never hid his struggle with sickle cell, even rapping about the condition on the track “You Can Never Feel My Pain” from his solo album, H.N.I.C.

You don’t have to suffer anymore, Rapper P. Rest Powerfully in Peace, Dunn.
