Japan Earthquake


A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan Friday causing massive damage and sparking a tsunami.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the quake hit at 0546 GMT and originally was reported at a magnitude of 7.9, but later was upgraded to 8.9 by the U.S. Geological Service.

The U.S. Geological Service also notes that this is the the fifth largest earthquake recorded worldwide since 1900.

Japanese news services have shown cars, ships and buildings swept away by massive waves of water.

Several fires have been reported and the official death toll sits at 32 but is expected to rise quickly.

A warning has been issued for the Pacific Basin, including Hawaii, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Authorities in Hawaii have ordered the evacuation of coastal areas.

The entire coast of California and Oregon has been issued a tsunami warning as well.
