Man Given 18 Years For Stabbing Death Of UConn DB.

Two years ago, John Lomax III killed University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard during an on-campus fight. Today (March 25), the 22-year-old, Lomax was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Lomax stabbed Howard, a 22-year-old defensive back on UConn’s football team in the abdomen causing his death during a fight between players and another group, according to authorities.

The October 2009 brawl reportedly started when Johnny Hood, a 23-year-old Hartford native got into an argument with two men, later identified as football players Brian Parker and A.J. Portee, after one of the players made disparaging comments about a woman.

Witnesses tell police that a fight between the two groups ensued with Parker being stabbed in the back during the rumble.

Several minutes later, the two groups converged again near the school’s basketball arena where witnesses say Howard swung on Lomax and Lomax countered by stabbing Howard.

Hood is charged with breach of peace and interfering with police. He and six others involved in the melee still have cases pending.

Lomax was charged with murder, but pleaded no contest to first-degree manslaughter in January.
