Doja Cat will either be on the receiving end of praise for her music and outsized personality or catching flack for it depending on the day. At the conclusion of the American Music Awards, the “Say So” star took home two awards, one of which has Twitter questioning the move.

Doja Cat, real name Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, approaches her music from a variety of angles. While she leans heavily into Hip-Hop, the 25-year-old Los Angeles native straddles the line between Pop and R&B with measurable ease as well. Winning the New Artist Of The Year award, Doja beat out Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, and Lewis Capaldi.

However, her win as Favorite Female Artist in the Soul/R&B category is what had fans on Twitter questioning the AMAs choice. The award nominees aside from Doja were Summer Walker, and Jhene Aiko, both solidly known as R&B singers. The category has long been dominated by the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce over the past decade.

Doja was also nominated in the Favorite Music Video category along with Future’s “Life Is Good” track featuring Drake, and The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” among others. Taylor Swift took home the award with her “Cardigan” track. Swift was also the recipient of the Artist Of The Year award.

Since winning the Soul/R&B award, Fans on Twitter had plenty to say but either way, it’s clear that Doja Cat has achieved the notoriety that befits her well-publicized talents and hit-making ability.
