A family in Georgia is in shock after an 8-month-old baby was attacked by a Pit Bull.
According to published reports, 8-month-old Iya Chivers was on the kitchen floor at her grandmother’s house when her grandmother states that the strange dog barged in the door and attacked the baby.
“And the dog burst in there and attacked her,” Grandmother Aubrey Haggins said. “And when he grabbed her … he just wouldn’t let go.”
According to Haggins, the dog carried Iya into the backyard and only dropped her when a family member began hitting the animal with an iron bar.
Baby Iya underwent a blood transfusion and surgery due to severe injuries to her back and legs, the day of the attack. Haggins also states that Baby Iya could require skin grafts for her injuries.
Doctors state that Iya will need more surgeries and may spend months in the hospital.
Haggins, who is Iya’s primary caregiver, accuses Iya’s mother of knowingly placing the child in harm’s way because the woman was afraid of the dog.
“I don’t understand how you can take a baby over to somebody’s house, and you’re scared of the dog,” Haggins said. “How could you leave your baby there?”
Baby Iya is currently in a neonatal intensive care unit and is being monitored around the clock.
