New Study Reveals That McDonalds Nuggets Contain Ingredient Used In Silly Putty

A new study reveals that McDonald’s chicken nuggets are not only unhealthy for you, but also contain ingredients that are found in Silly Putty.

According to a published report by CNN, the world wide fast-food chain makes this popular menu item with the chemical preservative tBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleum-based product.

McNuggets also contain dimethylpolysiloxane, “an anti-foaming agent” also used in Silly Putty.

Although disgusting, McDonald’s says the differences are based on the local tastes and that all McNuggets don’t contain these chemicals.

According to Lisa McComb, Media Spokeswoman for McDonalds in Great Britain, McNuggets don’t contain these chemicals and they’re less fattening due to being cooked prior to being battered, which is opposite of how the McNuggets are cooked in the states.

McComb also states that dimethylpolysiloxane is used as a matter of safety to keep the oil from foaming, and that although the chemical is a form of silicone used in cosmetics and Silly Putty, a review of animal studies by The World Health Organization found no adverse health effects associated with the ingredient.

In addition to silicone, another ingredient causing concern is TBHQ, a preservative for vegetable oils and animal fats and represents .02 percent of the oil in the nugget.

Many nutritionists are alarmed at the side effects that one gram (one-thirtieth of an ounce) of the oil can cause.

Side effects include: “nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse,” according to “A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives.”

While the ingredients sound scary, according to New York University professor and author Marion Nestle in his CNN interview, the ingredients sound scarier than they truly are.

“The tertiary butylhydroquinone and dimethylpolysiloxane in the McNuggets probably pose no health risks,” Nestle said. “As a general rule parents shouldn’t feed their children foods with ingredients you can’t pronounce.”

Question of the day: Do you eat or feed you kids  McNuggets? Does it surprise you that McNuggets contain a chemical that’s also used in “Silly Putty” and does it change your mind about eating them?
