Three Hearing-Impaired Men Stabbed After Sign Language Is Mistaken For Gang Signs
31-year-old Alfred Stewart, who is deaf and mute, and three others including a bouncer are recovering in a hospital from non-fatal wounds suffered at the Ocean’s Eleven Sports Lounge and Grill in Florida.
A woman named Barbara Lee saw the crew of men communicating with each other and mistook their signs for gang signs. She became enraged and the 45-year-old woman confronted them as they motioned for her to leave them alone.
She left the bar and returned later with a juvenile and 19-year-old Marco Ibanez. They proceeded to stab Stewart and his friends who were out celebrating a birthday. The bouncer was hit with a bottle while Stewart and his party suffered wounds to their back and torso.
Lee and her cohorts were arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
