If you thought Eddie Murphy dropping a reggae tune called “Red Light,” featuring Snoop Dogg, was an elaborate joke, you would have been wrong. The comedian and actor drops the official video for his latest single.

The video finds Murphy performing in a studio with a band interspersed with a narrative involving a young girl walking through the hood. Snoop jumps in for about eight bars and some ad libs. “Red Light” will be a appearing on Murphy’s forthcoming new album 9, due out later this year.

“I have always had a deep love and passion for music,” says Eddie Murphy in a press statement. “There are so many important issues and events taking place in our country and the world right now that I think are being lost in the frenzy of sensationalism, and I felt moved to speak about it in my own way.  Reggae music embodies love and positivity and has always been rooted in social consciousness, so it was the perfect genre for what I wanted to say.  I decided to reach out to my long-time friend, Snoop Lion to hop on the track since we both strive for the same positivity.”

No shots, but imagine if Chappelle’s Show was still around to make this a skit? Watch the John Mazyck-directed video for “Red Light” below.
