Black Detroit Woman Shot & Killed While Seeking Help

With just two months since the tragic death of former Florida A&M student Jonathan Ferrell, another Black person seeking help after an auto accident was shot and killed. Renisha McBride, a Detroit teenager, was shot and killed after authorities say she may have been looking for medical assistance in an outlying suburb.

McBride, 19, was in a car accident around 2:30 a.m. last Saturday (Nov. 2) in the Dearborn Heights area, her family says. They add that McBride’s cellphone died and prompted her to seek help in the neighborhood not far from where her automobile was wrecked.

The unthinkable happened when she knocked on the door of a man who exited his home with a shotgun and shot McBride in the head. Even more harrowing is that the teen’s aunt says that McBride apparently tried to to turn and run, as the buckshot from the weapon entered the back of her head.

The unnamed man that killed McBride may be facing charges after police filed a request with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. McBride’s family, distraught over the loss, are seeking answers and demand justice.

He shot her in the head … for what? For knocking on his door,” said Bernita Spinks Tuesday to the Detroit News. “If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911.”

Spinks added, ““You see a young black lady on your porch and you shoot? He killed my niece and he needs to pay for it. He needs to be in jail. There was no window broken. My niece didn’t bother anyone. She went looking for help and now she’s dead.”

McBride will be laid to rest in Detroit this Friday.
