The real Betty Shabazz got burned but Rapsody probably set the booth ablaze when she recorded her ode to Malcolm X’s late wife. And similar to the slain Civil Rights leader, North Carolina’s celebrated mistress of ceremony is a genius with those nouns and verbs that penetrate the soul of all who hear the sermon.
For the accompanying visual, Sister Raps is dressed in her Sunday’s best; preferably for a homegoing service, most likely one for a rival rapper who couldn’t keep up. That being said, all churches, synagogues, cathedrals and mosques should keep blocks of their schedule open for MCs who want to go head and lay it on down for good.
Speaking of rivals in the associated arena, Rapsody’s name has been a hot button subject in the Hip-Hop news as of late. Her glaring omission from the 2014 XXL Freshman being the main reason. Hip-Hop Wired spoke to XXL Editor-in-Chief Vanessa Satten and she explained the reason for Rapsody (and all other female rappers of the current day) to be absent didn’t have anything to do with a quota needing filled.
