Rick Rubin Legally Changes His Name

What’s in a name?

Well if you’re a public personality, celebrity or musician, fans and in many instances, family know you for what you’ve chosen to call yourself.

Rick Rubin’s name is synonymous with Hip-Hop culture as he and Russell Simmons co-founded Def Jam Records together in the early 80s, but “Rick” is not his legal birth name. He shorted his moniker, which is Frederick Jay Rubin.

Now he’s taking it to the courts to make sure no one will ever call him Frederick again.

Via TMZ:

Hip hop legend Rick Rubin has a way with music and words — he launched Def Jam, after all — but when it comes to his own name he needs a little help from a judge … to change it.

Rubin’s filed legal docs — obtained by TMZ — to legally change his name from the one on his birth certificate … Frederick Jay Rubin.

The famed producer — who’s worked with Jay Z, the Beastie Boys, Metallica, Neil Diamond and many many more — simply wants to make his nickname all legal and stuff.

Yes, he’s going from Frederick to Rick — ’cause who’d work with Fred Rubin?

As for why 51-year-old FredeRick’s making the dramatic change — his rep had no comment.

Rubin is expected to have a heavy in hand in sculpting Kanye West’s next project. The credits will undoubtedly say “produced by Rick Rubin.”
